The People’s Republic is on the verge of embracing a fresh competitive pursuit: Match Poker. E-commerce behemoth, Alibaba, is joining forces with the media entity Ourgame to introduce this non-wagering variant of poker to the Chinese populace.
Although specifics of the collaboration remain undisclosed, the two corporations harbor a lofty objective: to cultivate a staggering two million Match Poker participants in China over the ensuing five years.
Indeed, wagering is presently prohibited within mainland China (excluding state-sanctioned lotteries and the distinct administrative zones of Hong Kong and Macau). However, unlike conventional poker games such as Texas Hold’em or Omaha, Match Poker entirely eliminates the element of betting.
Conceived by the International Federation of Poker (IFP), Match Poker centers around collaborative gameplay. Participants accumulate points rather than acquiring monetary winnings, and the cards are distributed electronically via a mobile application instead of in person.
The IFP underscores that Match Poker is a game of proficiency, not luck. Their software guarantees an equitable playing environment where teams triumph based on their strategic acumen, an aspect that can be subject to debate in traditional poker.
“The Ourgame and Alisports collaboration establishes one of the most formidable sports marketing forces globally,” remarked IFP President Patrick Nally. “I am pleased that they will be dedicating their resources and endeavors to the advancement and expansion of Match Poker and share my conviction in its immense worldwide prospects.”
