Melbournes enormous casino enterprise, Crown Resorts, has been hit with an unprecedented penalty of 120 million Australian dollars, roughly 67.7 million in US currency. This follows the company’s flagrant disregard for responsible gaming protocols.
The Australian corporation has been under scrutiny for a considerable period, facing allegations that local gaming authorities were excessively lenient towards their violations. This substantial fine, however, indicates a significant shift in perspective and a clear indication that Crown’s irresponsible behavior will no longer be accepted.
The Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission, the entity responsible for issuing this historic punishment, emphasized that Crown’s shortcomings were widespread and appalling. A staggering 100 million Australian dollars of the penalty was imposed because the casino neglected to prevent patrons from gambling continuously for over 24 hours. An additional 20 million Australian dollars were added to the sanction due to their inability to stop customers from tampering with electronic gaming devices using plastic tools.
This judgment comes after a Royal Commission investigation spearheaded by Fran Thorn, who didn’t mince words in her evaluation of Crown’s conduct. Thorn declared, “These weren’t isolated occurrences. This was a pattern of widespread, persistent, and ingrained deficiencies that extended for approximately 12 years within Crown.” She proceeded to emphasize the devastating consequences of Crown’s actions, recounting tales of financial devastation, suicidal ideation, and families shattered by gambling dependence.
Simultaneously, the major Australian gaming corporation, Star Entertainment, faces scrutiny from New South Wales regulators. The Independent Casino Commission, an oversight entity, alleges Star committed numerous severe infractions, including enabling financial crimes and engaging in questionable practices with criminal syndicates.
