Emerging wagering company, AK Bets, has appointed Joe Lee to lead their Strategy and Performance division. Lee brings extensive betting industry experience, having cultivated his expertise over six years at Paddy Power Betfair.
Unfamiliar parties should know that AK Bets originated as a conventional horse racing bookmaker, launching in Killarney in July 2021. Despite initial challenges (a €1,172 loss on their first day!), they’ve experienced rapid growth. Their first year saw over 70,000 wagers, and they recently expanded their digital presence with a website and mobile application in early 2023.
Lee boasts an impressive professional background. During his tenure at Paddy Power Betfair, he held numerous roles, including Head of Product Management, Head of Trump Betting (indeed!), and Head of UK & Ireland. His experience also includes positions at prominent companies such as Sportsbet, Matchbook Betting Exchange, and One-Zero.
“Returning to this sector is fantastic,” Lee remarked. “Joining AK Bets and re-entering a startup atmosphere with a skilled team is both invigorating and novel.”
He expressed optimism for the company’s trajectory, adding, “Although the industry has seen significant consolidation, there’s ample opportunity for disruptors like AK Bets. I’m keen to leverage my experience to contribute to the company’s success.”
AK Bets originated from the vision of Anthony Kaminskas, a former colleague of Lee’s during their time at Paddy Power. Within that organization, he held a prominent position managing risks associated with horse racing, eventually ascending to a leadership role overseeing greyhound racing operations.
