The UKs Jockey Club has selected a well-known figure to join its governing body, replacing Luca Cumani. Industry expert John Ferguson, a name synonymous with racing, takes on the position. Ferguson’s background is varied, rising from modest origins as a stable hand to positions as a racing administrator, proprietor, and breeder.
Among his career achievements are a fruitful period as assistant trainer to the celebrated Michael Stoute, followed by an extraordinary tenure training independently, where he saddled an astounding 287 National Hunt victors. He is equally adept at the breeding aspect, having served as a bloodstock representative, procuring promising equines for patrons. This experience led him to establish Natalma Bloodstock in 2021.
True to its name, Natalma concentrates on bloodstock ventures, with broodmares strategically located throughout Europe, the United States, and Australia. Further enhancing his already remarkable credentials, Ferguson dedicated over two decades, from 1994 to 2017, collaborating with Darley and Godolphin, the international racing and breeding enterprises of Sheikh Mohammed.
“My time in racing has surpassed my most ambitious aspirations, working alongside exceptional individuals, and I am both privileged and honored to accept this appointment,” remarked Ferguson. “From my beginnings as a stable lad and my inaugural victory over hurdles at Hexham to training, breeding, possessing, and trading horses globally, I aspire to effectively represent the sport’s license holders.”
The destiny of equestrian competition rests with us, and we are dedicated to ensuring its prosperity for future generations,” stated Joe Saumarez Smith, the head of the British Horseracing Authority, as he greeted Ferguson to their ranks. He highlighted Ferguson’s vast background in conditioning and raising horses, coupled with his profound comprehension of the field stemming from his tenure in executive positions.
